Plein Air painting is an art form in of itself. The artist immerses oneself within an environment and transcribes what is witnessed onto the canvas. In a way it is directly ‘mirroring’ the surroundings through the artist and into the piece of art.
I approach this through a ‘conversation’ I have with the landscape, with the spirit of the land. I start with an intention of meeting the spirits of the land through a ceremony where we meet. Cultivating a particular state of consciousness, where I can feel a certain closeness, I begin to paint, closely listening and being sensitive to what is unseen and underneath the visible world.
After a painting is complete, it is in essence a part of that place, and has life within. These paintings can be a companion to a certain place or time, offering wisdom and friendship along the way.
